Getting GTwap on your PSP

Index

Introduction

To connect your PSP to the internet, you need to be in range of a wireless ‘hotspot’. This can be one of a growing number of public access points, e.g. Starbucks, or your own wireless router connected to your Broadband service.

Either way, you will need the following information:

  1. SSID - The Broadcast name of the wireless access point.

  2. WLAN Security method - WPA, WEP or None (note that WPA2 is not supported).

  3. Passkey or Security key - an alphanumeric code required on all secure connections.

  4. Address Settings - usually these are set (automatically) by the access point, but you do need to check.

Ask the owner of the access point for this information. If the access point belongs to you, check your wireless router manual for this information.

Troubleshooting

If you receive an error message, re-check your settings. Press and select Edit.

  1. To facilitate setup, temporarily enable Broadcast SSID on your router.

  2. Check that your router is set up for 802.11b or 802.11b+g (Mixed Mode). The PSP does not support the faster 802.11g standard.

  3. Re-type the Passkey and check carefully that it is correct.

  4. Also check that the WLAN Security setting is correct. If your router is set to WPA2, change it to WPA or WPA+WPA2 (Mixed Mode). The PSP does not support WPA2.

  5. Make sure you have the latest PSP System Software installed. You can download updates from uk.playstation.com/help-support/psp/ and run them from your memory stick. Refer to the PSP online manual.

  6. Version 3.0 of the PSP system software added WPA support for Wi-Fi, but only up to 128-bit encryption. For maximum security, you should always set the longest passkey you can, but if you use more than 13 characters the key will be too long for the PSP. For 128-bit encryption, set a passkey of between 6 and 13 characters (inclusive) on your router.

  7. There can be incompatibility issues between some routers and the PSP, just as with any other wireless device. Try reducing the security level on your router a step at a time until you get a connection. As a last resort, disable WLAN Security on your router and PSP, and set the router to accept only the MAC Address of your PSP.

To find your PSP’s MAC Address, select Settings > System Settings > System Information. Type the address displayed here into the Add MAC Address field of your router’s control panel.

Note that that your network and data will be less safe with such basic security. Consider purchasing a different router or at least hiding the SSID of your wireless LAN.
